Lord Hanuman is one of the zoomorphic characters of Hindu gods along with Lord Ganesha, Varha Avtaar of Lord Vishnu and many more. He is known to have aided Lord Rama during 14 years of his exile. He is among one of the most worshiped gods among all the Hindu pantheon. He is believed to be Rudra Avtaar of Lord Shiva.
Hanuman means the symbol of devotion, strength and perseverance. The mythic Hindu texts speak lot about lord hanuman who is son of Wind God (Vayu god). He is god of enormous strength and devotion. He is unquestionable devotee of Lord Rama (hero of Ramayana). In some ancient texts he is also defined as supernatural creature on Earth.
Story about birth : Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva Connection
Story 1: Once Lord Shiva and Mata (mother) Parvati decided to transform them into monkeys. After transforming themselves to monkeys they started indulging in amorous games in the dense forests of Himalayan region. Just due to climatic moment the seed of Lord Shiva found its mark thereby impregnated Mata Parvati. During a climactic moment the seed of Shiva found its mark and impregnated Parvati. Since they had taken form of simian hence it was natural that the baby born with such a union would definitely be monkey or Vanar.
As they didn’t wish to go against the laws of nature and have responsibility towards nature, Lord Shiva directed Vayu (the wind god ) to carry his semen’s from Mata Parvati’s womb to the womb of Mata Anjana ( a female monkey queen who was an Apsara in the court of Indra) as she then had pleased Lord Shiva through her praying from the wish to get boy baby. This way Lord Hanuman was born from the womb of Mata Anjani.
Story 2: Another story related to the birth of Rudra Avtaar Hanuman is stated in Shiva Purana where there is slight variant version that when Lord Vishnu took avataar in form of heavenly beauty Mohini to kill Bhasmasur raksha, Lord Shiva was so impressed by the beauty of Mohini avtaar that he was unable to restrain his seed. God of wind (Vayu devta) thereafter carried the seed and deposited into the womb of Mata Anayana.
Two Exceptional traits of Lord Hanuman during his birth
1) He was not born naked like ordinary child but he was born wearing lion cloth.
2) He was born with earrings in his ears
Story attached to earrings of Baby Hanuman: When he was in the womb of Mata Anjana, there was undisputed monkey king named Bali, who was very strong and powerful vanar (monkey king). He even had defeated Ravana. He was also blessed with boon at he would get half the power of his enemy during fights. When Bali heard about Mata Anjana being pregnant and the child born would definitely be his rival he decided to end his yet to be born rival in Anjana’s womb. So he created missile with five metals (silver, gold, copper, tin and iron). He then launched the missile to womb of sleeping Mata Anajana. A normal child would had succumbed to his lethal attack but since the child was born with Shiva’s fiert seed the missile soon touched hanuman’s body and melted and transformed it to pair of earrings, hence as a result of first war won by Hanuman, he was born with earrings on his ears.
Birth Place of Lord Hanuman
Many places in India are claimed to be the birthplace of Hanuman. Some of those places are as briefed below:
1) There is one claim which says that Lord Hanuman was born in Karnataka ion Anjaneya hills of Hampi. This place is nearby well known lake, Pampa Sarovar in Risyamukha mountain.
2) There is a small village named Anjan which is 18 km away from “Anjan Dham”. This place is said to be the birthplace of Hanuman. The name is Anjan and is derived from the name of Hanuman’s mother Anjani Mata.
3) Anjaneri mountain is another place which is claimed to be birthplace of Lord Hanuman. The place is located 7 km from Trimbakeshwar, Nasik district of Maharastra.
4) There is another claim which says that hanuman was born on Lakshka Hill of Churu district in Rajasthan.
5) There are many people who claims Lord Hanuman was born in Anjandham, which is 20 kms from Gumla district in Jharkhand. Shabri Ashram is also located here and this is the same place where Mata Shabri had fed fruits to Lord Rama and his brother Lakshmana.
Childhood of Lord Hanuman
Hanuman was son of two illustrious fathers i.e. Lord Shiva and Vayu, the wind god. Hence He was not no ordinary child. He was too energetic, too much spirited, restless inquisitive. His remarkable feats can be seen in the scriptures abound in tales as in below:
1) Once when Lord Hanuman was a kid he mistook the sun as a ripe fruit and he rushed towards the sky in order to grab and eat it. On his way he mistook Rahu as a worm since Rahu was on his way to devour sun thereby causing eclipse, Hence hanuman dashed toward Rahu to catch hold of him. Rahu started running for his life and tool shelter in refuge of Lord Indra. Lord Indra then took airavat his white elephant along with his deadly thunderbolt and started searching for Hanuman in order to seek restrain of his seeming impudence. The clouds started rumbling and lightening started thundering across the sky as result of Lord Indra’s wrath but even in this scary scenario nor Indra could bring fear in the heart of kid Hanuman rather against it Hanuman seemed to be excited and he mistook airavat to be a toy. Lord Hanuman soon started to make grab for the pachyderm, seized the trunk of aravata and leapt on his back. Taken aback by his spirited and playful defiance, Indra got furious and stuck thunderbolt on the head of hanuman. Being hit by thunderbolt, Lord Hanuman speedily started falling down to the earth, but soon his father Vayu caught him in mid air.
The sight of Hanuman, his beloved son, lying on his arms infuriated him and he started sucking all the air from the universe and cried loud saying. “Let all those get choked to death who had harmed Anajan’s son.” There was panic all around in the cosmos without air. Life on every corner of cosmos was threatened. Gods soon realized their folly and hence went in unison to Vayu (father of hanuman) asking for his forgiveness. Hence to make amendments they then showered blessings and powers on to hanuman as in below:
a) Lord Brahma blessed him by saying that he may live as long as lord Brahma lives on.
b) Lord Vishnu blessed him by saying that he will live all his life as the greatest among great devotee of Lord Vishnu.
c) Lord Indra blessed him by saying that no weapon of any kind will be able to wound or hit him in his body.
d) Agni, the fire god, said that he will remain unaffected by Fire.
e) Kala said that he will never have to court death.
f) All the gods said that none of them will ever be equal to his strength and speed.
Brahma thus concluded the session by giving greater power to Hanuman than Vayu and Garuda. Hanuman was blessed with greater speed than mightiest wind too. Thus pacified by the blessings given to Lord Hanuman, Vayu restored air and Hanuman was soon returned to his parents.
Catch: It was decreed by them that Hanuman would remain blissfully unaware about his powers, unless or until someone would remind him about his superhuman ability.
Teacher And Guru Of Lord Hanuman
Parasara Maharishi says Hanuman worshipped Sun god, the Surya Bhagwan as his Guru and under his guidance he learned the Vedas and mastered the Nine Vyakarnas.
To study Nine Vyakarnas one needs to have a married life, which means to have the status of being a Gurhasthi. Hanuman was Aajanma Brahmachari and so was not eligible to master the Nine Vyakarnas. So, Trumurthis approached the Sun god to create a beautiful woman.
Surya Bhagwan created an Aajanma Brahmacharini named Suvarchala Devi from its rays. Her marriage was arranged with Hanuman, taking care not to affect the Brahmacharya status of his.
Parasara Samhita mentions the marriage took place on Jyestha Suddha Dasam. It is further said the day was Wednesday under the star Uttara. Even today many observe Hanumat Kalyanam, which means Hanuman’s marriage. It is on Jyestha Suddha Dasam day.
This way Hanuman learned Nine Vyakarnas and he spent all of his married life serving Lord Rama.
After imparting knowledge Hanuman asked Sun god what gurudakshina (fee given to teacher against teaching) he wants. The Surya Bhagwan said that the fee is pleasure of teaching such a dedicated student.
However, Surya Bhagwan asked him to help Prince of Kishkinda, Sugriva, who was his spiritual son.
The significance of Lord Hanuman choosing Sun god as his teacher is that Surya is Karma Saakshi, which means an eternal witness of all deeds.
One story reveals Hanuman’s mother asked him to get educated and the best teacher for him is Sun god as he dispels all darkness.
He approached the Sun god with the request but he was answered that as Sun god is always on the move so how he can teach him. The reply angered Hanuman and so he blocked the path of Sun god, who thereafter agreed saying Lord Hanuman need to find out the way.
Hanuman started walking backwards while facing the Sun god. After one week of education Hanuman set one foot on the rising hill and the other foot on the setting hill. In the posture he faced Sun god and continued the study. Sun god taught all that Hanuman was suppose to be taught.
Adulthood of Lord Hanuman
Adulthood of Hanuman is mostly known from the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. He is popular for his strength. He is known for locating Lord Rama’s wife Sita who was kidnapped by Ravana, for lifting a mountain and tearing his chest open to reveal his heart houses Rama and Sita.
Lord Hanuman in Ramayana
Hanuman meets Rama in the forest when the latter was on a 14-year exile with brother Lakshmana and was in search of his wife Sita, who was kidnapped by evil king Ravana. Rama’s ally, monkey king Sugriva, sends Hanuman to island kingdom Lanka for his supernatural powers as others could not jump or swim the sea.
Hanuman transformed himself to the size of mountain and flew across the narrow sea channel to reach the island. To take an entry into the city he shrinks himself to the size of an ant. He disvoeres Sita who was guarded by demon warriors in a grove. He meets her after the warriors fell asleep. He discovers Ravana is forcing her to marry.
Following refusal of Sita to escape as Rama must rescue her Hanuman started destroying the grove to instigate the warriors to capture him. He ends up getting captured and burned down the palace when his tail was lit with fire on the order of Ravana.
Lord Hanuman in Mahabharata
There are many instances where Mahabali Hanuman appeared in the Mahabharata.
1) When Pandavas were on exile Lord Hanuman appeared as aged and weak vanar (human form of monkey) in front of Bhima to subdue his arrogance.
2) Hanuman appeared in front of Arjuna as a small talking monkey in Rameshwaram (same place where Rama had built bridge to rescue Mata Sita from Lanka).
3) After finishing Kurukshetra’s battle Lord Krishna asked Arjuna to step down from the chariot, which was followed by him. Then lord krishna thanked Hanuman for staying with them in the form of a flag on the chariot during the fight with kaurva’s. Lord Hanuman then left the chariot, came down with his original form, bowed to Krishna and flew away into the sky. The moment Mahabaii Hanuman left the flag the chariot started to burn and with blast it turned into ashes. Lord Krishna then told Arjuna, who was shocked seeing the burning, that the reason why his chariot stood during the war was due to Lord Hanuman. If he was not on the chariot, the vehicle would have blasted during the war as the effect of celestial weapons which were thrown at him in the war.
Lord Hanuman in the Puranas
In Puranas it is mentioned Hanuman travelled to Patala Loka through a lotus stem in search of his son Matsyavallabha. He killed Mahiravana and rescued Rama and Lakshmana.
Mahiravana was Ravana’s maternal uncle and he kidnaps Rama and Lakshmana during the war and takes the two to Patala Loka through a tunnel.
In Shiva Purana a war is mentioned between Shiva and Rama as well as Lord Hanuman at the time of Ashwamedh Yagnya.
The story goes this way that Rishi Agastya advices Rama to perform the yagnya. Rama appoints brother Shatrughna to protect the sacrificial horse. The horse is set loose and it enters the city of King Veeramani, a great devotee of Lord Shiva. The horse is seized by the king’s son and war takes place thereafter between army of Rama and the King. Lord Hanuman appears to protect Rama’s army while Shiva to protect Veeramani.
Details of the story can be found in Volume 5 – Section 5 – Patal Kanda of the Padma Purana. It is learned on the 12th day of the fight Shatrughna fired Brahmastra at Shiva, who countered by discharging Bramasiras. Shatrughna fell unconscious and Hanuman rushed to the battleground.
In Padma Purana it is mentioned Hanuman fought with Shiva to protect the army of Rama.
Lord Hanuman in Jainism
In the Jain version of Ramayana written by Vimalasur Hanuman is not mentioned as a Shiv avatar, but known as just a son of a Vanar. His name is similar to Pawan, which means Wind God.
In Jainism Lord Hanuman is also called as Vidyadhara, which simply means to be a supernatural creature and his lineage is compared to that of Ravana. It is also mentioned Hanuman can change his shape and size. He can fly too.
In the Jainism version it is said Lord Hanuman was raised on an island named Hanuraha by his great maternal uncle. The story goes this way that Vidhyadhara prince Pawangati and Anjana Sundari stayed away due to a misunderstanding and met just once in a secret place. After the meeting Anjana conceives. Anjana’s in-laws was not aware of the secret meeting and hence sends her to forest where Hanuman was born.
Lord Hanuman’s maternal uncle rescues the two and while flying in a chariot the baby Hanuman falls. He falls on a rock that cracked but he remains uninjured. It was a message thata supernatural creature is born.
In Jainism it is believed Hanuman is not celibate and married to Ravana’s niece Anangakusuma, who was daughter of Chandranakha, and so he was not a brahmachari.
Jains believe Lord Hanuman was initially angry on Rama as he had killed his father-in-law. Later he came to know the facts and thereafter becomes follower of Rama.
In one another story of Jainism it is learned Hanuman had married more than hundred relatives of Surgiv to ally with him after meeting him in Kishkinda.
Head of a Jain temple in Samasgad, Nirbhay Sagar Maharaj, lately said Hanuman was a jain and part of the 169 great persons identified in the religion.
Samasgad is just 25 km from Bhopal and Maharaj further adds that Hanuman was a kshatriya and like other jains h had no caste.
In Jainism it is believed that he was not a monkey faced person, but was Kamdev, which means one who is most handsome on the earth.
Lord Hanuman in Sikhism
Mahabali Hanuman is mentioned in Hanuman Natak of Sikh and he is addressed as Balwant or Balwinder.
Lord Hanuman in Indonesia
It is to notice that official mascot of Indonesia’s military intelligence is Hanuman. Similarly the god appeared as the official mascot of the 1997 South-East Asian Games at Jakarta.
Lord Hanuman in Thailand
Thai version of Hanuman is different from what is learned and known in India through ancient texts. In Thailand Ramayana the book is called Ramakien (Glory of Rama) and several versions of it are lost after the Burmese invasion. The clothing, the context and many aspects of Hanuman differ in the book. Hanuman has been given a more central role. He leads the war being general of the apes army. He is depicted as albino white.
One of the known differences is that Lord Hanuman expanded his body in a giant form and extended his tail across the sea from southern tip of India to Lanka to allow army cross it climbing on his tail.
In India people chant Hanuman Chalisa, Bajrang Ban and Sankatmochan, but these songs are missing in Thailand.
In Indian version the story of Lord Hanuman is more of a devotional tale while in the Thais it is more of a cultural tale.
In Ramakien Hanuman is depicted as a jovial person and one who is fun loving. People there consider him as a lucky charm.
Lord Hanuman in Malaysia
Footprints of Hanuman are found across Asia and one is in Malaysia’s Penang. It is kept in a small temple. It is said people visiting the temple coins on it for good luck.
It is learned the footprint of Lord Hanuman was captured here in Malaysia while he was in search of medicinal herbs for Rama’s brother Lakshmana.
Even in Valmiki’s Ramayana the land holds significant importance.
Lord Hanuman around the Globe
In Hindu mythology it is believed soul never dies. It keeps on reincarnating in several forms in several births. However, there are believes that some beings live for ever and across the ages without reaching to death and one such is Lord Hanuman. It is believed he still lives somewhere on the earth.
Legend says Rudra Avtaar Hanuman is immortal as he was blessed to live forever among the devotees of Rama as long as the stories of Rama are on people’s lips. So in other words it is believed he is present in all such places where the glory of Rama is sung or talked.
Ramayana took place in the Treta Yuga. Lord Hanuman played an important role in Ramayana being a follower of Rama. In Mahabharata too Hanuman has been mentioned. The epic took place in the Dwapar Yuga. These stories depict Hanuman lived through the ages.
It is strongly believed by few learned people have seen Lord Hanuman in the Kali Yuga too. In the 13th century A.D. Sage Madhavarcharya is believed to have been graced with the visit of Hanuman. It is also said that Hanuman visited Tulsidar in 1600s to inspire him write Ramayana, the Ram Charit Manas. Similarly Ramadas Swami, Raghavendra Swami, Swami Ramdas and Sri Sathya Sai Baba have been graced with the darshan of Lord Hanuman.
It is believed Ram Bhakt (lord Rama Devote) Hanuman comes to his devotees in invisible form to help them when chanted his name.
A story reveals Rama wanted Lord Hanuman to live on earth as long as his name is chanted by devotees. So after the death of Rama he left Ayodhya and went to jungle.
He went to jungles of Rama first where Ravana’s brother Vibhisana was ruling. A lot of stories revolve around Lord Hanuman living in the jungle and being served by dwellers.
Before moving out of the jungle it is believed he gave a Mantra as blessing to the dwellers to chant and said he would appear to all the devotees who chant the Mantra.
The Mantra was secret and so the community head asked what if it is stolen and misused. Hanuman said it is not to worry as only those people will get the fruit of Mantra who has the belief of soul’s relationship with him.
It was also asked how the future generation will benefit from the Mantra as they may not believe having soul’s relationship with Lord Hanuman. Hanuman thereafter said he will come after every 41 years for the purpose. So it is believed Hanuman still live.
Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva
There are several stories about the origin of Lord Hanuman and one such is related the Shiva and Parvati. The two transforms themselves into monkeys to indulge into amorous games in the jungle. Parvati becomes pregnant and learning this Shiva asks Vayu (wind) to carry the offspring away from the womb of Parvati and drop in Anjana’s womb.
Anjana was an Apsara in monkey form and she had pleased Lord Shiva with her prayers to bear her a boy child.
In one story Lord Hanuman is said being son of King and Queen of the Monkeys.
It is also said that Hanuman is offspring of Vayu and Anjana.
In yet another story the tale is different. It is said Shiva heard about the battle between gods and demons during Samudra Manthan in which Vishnu took the form of beautiful woman Mohini to infiltrate and distract the demons. Shiva heard about Mohini too and wanted to see her. He became attracted by the beauty of Vishnu’s such form and released a seed on the ground. Seven sages or the Saptarishis took the permission of Shiva and placed the seed in the womb of Anjani, who had earlier pleased Shiva with her prayers to get a boy child. This way Hanuman was born.
A story in India also goes this way that Shiva’s devotion to Rama is unique and complete. He took the form of Hanuman on Earth when Vishnu incarnated as Rama. He wanted to serve his master forever. It is well said there will never be a devotee like Hanuman for Rama.
But the question arises why Shiva took the form of a monkey. It is said he wanted to adapt any condition while serving Rama. So the lower portion was of monkey. A monkey does not need cooked food, does not need ornaments and does not need bed. This was true devotion and love of Shiva to Vishnu.
War Between Lord Rama And Lord Hanuman
There was a meeting to be held in Ayodhya after Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya. All the great sages and saints like Narada muni, Vasishta rishi and Vishvamitra were invited there and when they were in court,
The topic of whether Rama is stronger or his name (Rama Nama) is strong erupted. Lord Hanuman kept silent and did not express his point of view.
Narada muni claimed Rama Nama was stronger than lord Rama himself. He said to be proving his point. When meeting was on its end phase and few sages started dispersing, Narada muni went to Lord Hanuman and told him not to respect sage Vishwamitra and to respect all other sages as sage Vishwamitra was a king.
Doing the same Hanuman greeted all other sages or saints except sage Vishwamitra, who didn’t seem to really mind this gesture. But seeing this Narada Muni told Sage Vishwamitra that Lord Hanuman was doing all this deliberately to avoid him. This angered sage Vishwamitra and in the fit of rage he went to Lord Rama and demanded death of Lord Hanuman for his behaviour. Since Sage Vishvamitra was guru of Lord Rama and so he had to go out of kill since he could not refuse orders of his guru.
Rama’s intentions were soon known to Hanuman and he was confused that why would Rama want to take away his life. But Narada muni told Lord Hanuman not to worry and to keep calm and start chanting Rama Naam when Rama comes with his arrow and bow to confront him.
The fight between Lord Rama and Lord Hanuman broke when Hanuman was chanting Rama Nama, “Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram”. Lord Rama was shooting his arrows one after another but they failed to hurt Hanuman. Soon Rama felt that his weapons were failing to harm him and he decided to use Brahmastra but even that failed to harm hanuman.
Seeing all things fail to kill Hanuman, Rama started thinking of other ways to kill him. In the meantime sage Narad muni, who was watching all these, admitted to Sage Visvamitra that he was the one who provoked Hanuman.
Rama and Hanuman soon came to know that it was Narad’s trickery which led to Lord Rama and Lord Hanuman fight. Hence they stopped the fight. Thus the point of sage Narada muni was proved that Rama Naam was bigger than Lord Rama himself.
Hanuman Fight With Shiva
Did Hanuman Fight With Shiva ?
Yes, Lord Hanuman did fight with Lord Shiva due to his duty towards Lord Rama.
The Hanuman and Shiva fight story: Sankat mochan Hanuman Shiva fight began due to king Virmani, who was devotee of Lord Shiva, when he took away sacrificial horse of Ashwamegh yagya, which was conducted by Shri Ram.
Lord Shiva then sent his gan to fight from the side of King Virmani as Lord Shiva had earlier promised to protect King Virmani.
The Shiva ganas (nandi, veerbhadra and many more) badly injured army of Lord Rama and this made Lord Hanuman angry and furious as a result of which he jumped into the scene and fought furiously. Lord Shiva’s gana could not bear the wrath of Lord Hanuman’s anger and hence Nandi and Veerbhadra were injured badly by Hanuman. Seeing this all of them ran in fear and for help to Lord Shiva, who was meditating in Kailash Parvat (Mount Kailash).
Lord Shiva soon appeared in the battle ground. Lord Hanuman offered him respect by doing pranam and said that King Virmani had made blunder by stopping the horse and his ganas had ignited his fury. This compelled him to fight them and he was still ready to fight anyone for sage of Lord Rams’s pride. Soon fight between Lord Shiva and Hanuman broke where in both started diffusing each other’s astras (weapons). Seeing the fighting skills of Lord Hanuman, in which he diffused all weapons of Lord Shiva, he became very happy and said – O greatest of Rama bhakt, your devotion and commitment to Lord Rama has made you invincible hence no weapon would ever harm you.
Soon Lord Rama came to knew about this fight and he rushed to the battlefield and offered salutations to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva explained to Lord Rama that he wasn’t willing to fight Lord Hanuman but he had to fight on account of promise given to King Virmani.
Now, Lord Rama and Lord Shiva explained King Virmani that they both were one and the same, so he should respect Lord Rama as much as he respected Lord Shiva. By the grace of Lord Shiva, all the people who were killed in the war were given life again.
Source – Padma Puran
Slightly different story: After Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya he decides to do Ashwamedha yagya. Shatrugan was assigned task of protecting the horse Ashwamedha yagya along Pushkal son Bharat. When the horse reached in Devpur village, which was then owned by king Veermuni (devotee of lord Shiva), Angad, son of Veermani, tied the horse thinking that no one can defeat his father Veermani as he was devotee of Lord Shia. As an aftermath battle took place and Pushkal killed Veermuni. Lord Shiva, hearing about death of Veermani, soon sent Veerbhadra to handle Pushkal and Shatrugan. Veerbhadra soon defeated them.
Lord Hanuman, hearing about the defeat of Pushkal and Shatrugan, attacked Veerbhadra, who runs to kailasha fearing wrath of Hanuman. Lord Shiva then comes to fight Hanuman saying that even if he was devotee of Lord Rama he was his enemy tonight. Hanuman wishes Lord Shiva and starts fighting with him. Lord Shiva got impressed by the feat of Lord Hanuman. Lord Rama comes into scene and tells Hanuman to stop the war and get sanjeevani buti for Veermani. Hanuman soon brings Sanjeevani buti from Himalayas to make Veermani alive.
Life after Ramayana
After Rama left Earth Hanuman went to the Himalayas. Rama assured him to come again in the next yuga in the form of Krishna to establish dharma.
Hanuman went to the jungles and mountains of Lanka where Ravana’s brother Vibhishana was the ruler. He lived with the offerings of jungle dwellers. Later he left Lanka giving Mantra as blessings to the community and said he will appear whenever they chanted the mantra.
Hanuman is mentioned in Mahabharata, which took place in the Dwapar yuga and when Krishna was born.
Eternal Hanuman – His Presence In Kali Yuga
Is Lord Hanuman still alive?
As far as what science says is energy i.e. atma can neither be created nor be destroyed but it can be changed from one form (body) to another. So Hindus believe that that soul keeps on re-incarnating until salvation or moksha is attained. There is no mention of Lord Hanuman’s death anywhere in any holy scriptures, which means he never died. Hence his form has to be same. As per guru jaggi there are people who never die and their body remains same. This is called as nirkalp kaya. So it is assumed that he is alive somewhere on earth but where and how it is not known.
As per Hindus holy book Lord Hanuman is immortal and he will always be available for devotees of Lord Rama. It is said Hanuman will be there where the name of Rama and his stories are talked and discussed.
Footprints of Lord Hanuman still exist in many places where he had walked and in many of those places temples have been made.
Many learned people have seen Hanuman. One such example is from 13th Century A.D. It is believed Sage Madhavarcharya was blessed by Hanuman’s visit. He is also said to have visited saint Tulsidas and this inspired Tulsidas to write Ram Charit Mans in early 1600s. Other people who are said to have benefitted from Lord Hanuman’s visits were Swami Ramdas, Ramadas Swami, Raghavendra Swami and Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
Where does Hanuman reside ?
As per Ramayana Hanuman is said to be present in all those places where lord Rama’s glory is being sung.
It is said that he continues to live in Gandmadana mountain, near Rameshwaram district in Tamil Nadu. There is a temple built here which is dedicated to Lord Hanuman.
Age of Hanuman
Calculations to Calculate age of Lord Hanuman :Ramayana took place in Treta Yuga. Full Dwapara Yuga passed along with added years of Kaliyuga.
1 Dwapar Yuga = 8,64,000 years
Kali Yuga began after the death of Lord Krishna, according to Bhagawatha Purana. Lord Krishna’s Death – 18th Feb 3102 BC approx.
Number of years after the death of Lord Krishna – 3102 BC till 1 BC + (from 1 AD till 2019) =5121 years.
Total years passed since the beginning of Dwapara Yuga= 8,64,000 + 5,121= Total (8,69,121)
Simultaneously, Treta Yug finished after the death Lord Rama. He ruled for almost 11,000 years as per Manu Smriti or any different versions of Ramayana.
8,69,121 + 11,000 = 8,80,121 years.
He became ruler when he was 50 years old approximately.
So Now, 8,80,121 + 50 = 8,80,171.
Assumption: Birth of Lord Ram and Lord Hanuman happened in same year,
Age of Hanuman: So with this assumption it is said Hanuman is 8,80,171 years old.
Distance between Earth and Sun in Hanuman Chalisa
In the 18th line of Hanuman Chalisa written by Goswami Tulsidas (born in 15th Century) the distance Earth and Sun is mentioned. It is written in Awadhi language and it is not known how he could accurate calculate the distance.
The 18th line of hanuman Chalisa is as below:
Juga Sahastra Yojana Par Bhanu, Leelyo Taahi Madhura Phala Jaanu
In the above the words Juga (Juug), Sahastra and Yojana are distance unit. One Juug is equal to 12,000 and one Sahastra is for 1,000. One Yojana is equal to 8 miles.
Hence, lets multiply all these three as below and see the result:
12000 x 1000 x 8 = 96,000,000 miles
1 mile = 1.6 kms
96,000,000 x 1.6 = 153,600,000 kms
According to Jean Richer and Giovanni Domenico Cassini in 1672 the distance between Earth and Sun is 22,000 times of the radii of Earth. The radius of our planet is 6,371 kms. Let’s multiply:
22,000 x 6371 = 140,162,000 kms
Modern astronomy says the distance between Earth and Sun are not the same throughout the year as the orbit of our planet around the sun is slightly eliptical and not in circle form. So the nearest distance is 91,445,000 miles (147,166,462 kms) while the farthest is 94,555,000 miles (152,171,522 kms). Earth is nearest to the Sun on January 3 and farthest on July 3. Hence the average distance is 92,955,807 miles (149,597,870 kms).
