Akshaya Tritiya is a highly auspicious day for both Hindus and Jains. This day is also known as Akha Teej and has a holy importance since ancient times. The muhurat i.e. auspicious time while doing something new in life like marriage, a venture, purchasing, etc. holds a significant value in Hindu religion. Thus, Akshaya Tritiya is one such day of which every second is good and sacred. And it is believed that anything started today will last for a lifetime and will be fruitful.

As per Hindu mythology, this day is observed on the third day (3rd tithi) of the bright half Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh (April-May). In 2016, this day falls on 9th May. Moreover, the sun and moon are the brightest that happens once in a year, thus making this the luckiest day for Hindus. Not just this, Akshaya means Endless – that which never diminishes. So, any endeavor started today will bring prosperity. Also, there is no need for any muhurat for doing good deeds such as marriage ceremony, opening new businesses, investing or purchasing valuables like gold and diamond jewellery.

Significance of Akshaya Tritiya:

Though, there are various myths and stories regarding Akshaya Tritiya, let’s check the most important ones, as why this day is fortunate.

  • Lord Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu was born, thus Parasurama Jayanti is celebrated.
  • Treta Yug started that is significant for the births of Lord Vishnu incarnations – Lord Ram, Parasurama and Vamana.
  • Ved Vyasa and Lord Ganesha started writing the great epic Mahabharata.
  • Kubera received wealth and the status as guardian of wealth by worshipping to Lord Shiva.
  • The Jains ends their one-year fast by Tirthankara Rishabha.
  • Pandavas received Akshaya Pathram (a bowl that will produce unlimited supply of food).
  • Sudama blessed with wealth boon from Krishna more then what he can ask for.
  • Mother Ganges or Ganga descended on the earth
Although, this day holds numerous significance, thus any ritual – Jap, Pitra-Tarpan, Yagya, Dan-Punya done on this day will stay with you till perpetuity. The bath is also taken by people in holy rivers like Ganga and Yamuna. Along with this, the incarnations of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi are also worshipped.

Well, this propitious day also marks the beginning of Satya Yug i.e. the Golden Age. Hence, this holy golden day is remembered for buying gold and diamond jewellery. It is believed that the jewellery bought and worn today will bring home wealth, success and luck. This also signifies the never diminishing good fortune. Thus, people wait for whole year to invest in gold, on this auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya.
