Lack of service

On the one hand, authentic saints in the religion are immersed deeply in their contemplation of the Supreme, and on the other, sham godmen are busy exploiting the masses. The result is a lack of service to the poor. The religion needs a Mother Teresa, who can dedicate his or her life to the service of the poor, downtrodden and homeless of the society.

Superstitions
A second drawback is the prevalence of superstitions and maeningless rituals in the religion today. The blame for this, surprisingly, does not rest only on the illiterate. Superstitions can be witnessed among the "so-called" literate and elite section of the population too. Superstitions spring out of either ignorance or lack of faith in God. In the case of illiterates, it is due to their ignorance. In the case of literates, it is simply due to their lack of faith in God. Examples of meaningless superstitions range from pumpkin-smashing to fire-walking.

Hypocricies
Unethical priests and pundits who extort money in the name of God, unhygeinic maintenance of temples in the north, and inhuman treatment of cows are all instances of evils and hypocricies in the religion today.

Fake Saints
The prominence of godmen who claim to be incarnations of God to the foolish masses that go to them is another curse for the religion. By far, the largest segement of the following for these godmen consists of middle-class and upper-class educated people. Again, this madness can be traced to their lack of faith in God. Such a lack of faith creates insecurity in these people and they turn to false preachers for refuge.
These are some of the drawbacks observed in the religion today. One has to understand that these drawbacks exist in a religion that belongs to 750 million people, a predominant majority of whom live in poverty and disease. It is the duty of the other segment of the population to act responsibly towards their brethren, which is unfortunately not happening. It is therefore conceivable that such evils should creep into the religion in such a situation.
