Can portraits of God and Goddess be repaired and resold?

Instead of flowing old portraits and statues in water, can there be something like, keeping them in water for sometime then repairing and reselling them.

In city where I live, we have seashore, people use to flow these in sea earlier. But now, someone made it compulsory to put flowers, portraits, statues, etc in a small pit like structure and burn them.

They did help to keep sea clean but then what about air...

for business purpose sure you can do that but for temple, i would say no, since khadit (broken) pieces cannot be prayed.
