Can you celebrate diwali if there is a death in the family?

No, absolutely not. According to the Hindu religion, if someone dies at the day of Diwali or any other festival. Then this festival becomes inauspicious(Khandit) for the family and can not celebrate that festival until any family member gives birth to a child on that day.

It is so sad that one cannot celebrate festivals like Diwali for several years due to death.. Isn't that Hindu pandit can come up with a way out like by doing puja for animal sacrifice.

Hey Nil, I agree with you. I am also against of sacrificing animals (Bali) in Hindu puja. This type of traditions should be banned, not only in Hindu religion but in any religion, caste.
