Medical report read that the cause of his death was rupture of blood vessel in brain. His disciples say the rupture was due to brahmarandhra pierced during mahasamadhi.

Brahmarandhra is an opening in the crown of his head.

Swami Vivekananda had earlier said he would not live more than forty years. He was 39 at his death. He was cremated on the bank of Ganga, just opposite to where 16 years before Ramakrishna was cremated. His funeral pyre was of sandalwood.

On the day of his death he woke up early and meditated for about three hours at Belur Math. He taught Sanskrit grammar, philosophy of yoga and Shukla-Yajur-Veda to pupils and later discussed a planned Vedic college with colleagues. At 7 pm he went into his room and asked others not to disturb him. At around 9:20 pm he died.

He was not only famous in India. He earned a good name in Chicago in 1893 for his speech at the Parliament of World's Religions. He introduced Hinduism there with his powerful speech that started as, "Sisters and brothers of America..."
