His right tusk was broken and this is the reason he is also known as Ekadanta. In some images he is seen holding the broken tusk with his right hand.

He broke his tusk to continue writing Mahabharata narrated by Ved Vyasa after his pen was broken.

Yes, there was a deal between Ganesha and Ved Vyasa that the narration need to be non-stop or else he will not write. So the writing too was a continuous process reciprocating to the dictation. After the pen broke, Ganesha broke his tusk to continue writing without any stop.

Actually the condition was proposed by Ganesha when Ved Vyasa requested him to write his narration about Mahabharata. Ved Vyasa was clever too and asked Ganesha that he should understand the verses and then write. At some complex stanzas Ganesha used to pause a bit to understand, and in meantime Vyasa used to quickly compose several more verses.

Yes, true. You know it took three years for both to complete writing Mahabharata.
