The sage Vyasa was meditating in the Himalayas and Lord Brahma appeared before him and requested him to write the Mahabharata for the benefit of everyone. Sage Vyasa accepted that he could not compose the verse and write it. Therefore he was looking for someone who is wise and who could write down as he sang. Brahma then requested sage Vyasa to pray to Lord Ganesha to help him.

Lord Ganesha has mentioned Vyasa that he had enormous work to do and could accomplish the task, only if he is quick in singing. Moreover, sage Vyasa has requested Lord Ganesha to understand the meaning of the verse and then only he was asked to write. Then the Vyasa started singing. Whenever sage Vyasa felt that Lord Ganesha was writing too fast for him, he came up with a difficult verse.

Meanwhile, Ganesha could decipher the meaning and would have composed several verses in his mind.

In this manner, Vyasa was able to complete Bharatham’s sixty lakh Grantham’s. It comprises of Kandapuranam, Ramayana, and Savithri Puranam and so on. Lord Ganesha wrote on Mount Meru by using his tusk. About 60 lakh Grantham’s, 30 lakhs are supposed to be in Deva Lokam and 14 lakhs in Asura Logam. All the remaining Grantham’s are assumed to be on the earth.

The sage Vyasa suppose to have sung 8800 Grantham’s which were difficult to decipher for Ganesha. He himself has stated that Ganesha, sage Vyasa himself and may be the only ones who has known the meaning of 8800 granthams. However, the Mahabharata is considered as the fifth Veda.
