Hell is described with details in many scriptures. Shrimad Bhagwatam Chanto 3 - Kapil Bhagwan & mata Devhuti prasang, Few chapters of Garud puran contains minute details about hells. According to Brahma Sahita there are 14 lokas within our Universe, 7 heavens & 7 lower planets or hellish planet but those 7 lower planets are very beautifull, few are more beautiful then the heavenly planets, e.g Sutal-loka, where Mahabhagwad Maharaj Bali resides after Bhagwan Vamana took away everything from him, his loka is more richer than Swargaloka where even Bhagwan MahaVishnu resides, lower planets are been constructed by a Demon architecture named Maidanav, who got skills & maya powers more than Devtas & with such powers he constructs magical& beautiful palace& one of his work was done at the time of Mahabharata named Indraprast for Pandavas which was once a part of Delhi, out of these 14 planets Earth resides in the middle as if its been located on the floor between 7th heavenly planet & above 8th planet or above 1st lower/hellish planet, within those 7 hells beneath is the Narakloka. There are around 2100 department in Narkloka where punishment is been given according to the sin committed by the person.

Qualification to become a Yamdutta
-----------------------------------------------------
Committing sin for 100 life spans, when a person is send to hell for 100 life spans he knows about every department where he was been tortured & now he is qualified to become a Yamdutta.

Journey to hell
------------------------
GARUDA PURANA:
BHAGAWAN DESCRIBES ABOUT THE WORLD OF YAMA (YAMAPURI):

“It is 100 yojana spacious, 25 yojanas in height, made of number of windows decorated by colourful flags, pearl and gem hangers, flower and auspicious leaf thoranas. There inside the palace is a decorated Divya mandap always echoing with dance and music recitals.
There Yamaduth can be seen with folded hands standing in one side and another side many kinds of diseases can be seen in there scary, grotesque forms. In the center Yama dharma raja will be seen seated in a happy demonur but in a fiery form, which will scare anyone who sees him. Close to it is Chitragupta’s palace, which is about 25 yojana in length and breadth and 10 yojanas in height. It can also be seen as very ornamental decorated by pearls, gems and gold. There in a Divya mandap Chitragupta can be seen seated. He will be seen writing the account of papa/sin and punyas/good deeds of all jivas meticulously with out leaving any detail. There wont be any mistake in the accounts written by Chitra gupta.

In the east of Chitragupta’s palace will be the graha (house) of the fever disease, in south is found graha of sala and vichari disease, west side will be found graha of indigestion, north side will be found the graha of stomach ache, southeast will be the graha of fainting, south west is found the graha of adchari disease, north east will be the graha of hysteria. Thus for each disease separate grahas or houses are made. In these houses the diseases wait patiently to get yama’s orders to act on the jiva. Garuda! In the south of yama’s palace, the papa jivas get tortured by yamakingaras in various ways.”

Who deserves hell?
------------------------------------------
list is long however we would share the 4 greatest sins mentioned in Shrimad Bhagwatam & these sins are where Kaliyuga resides with maximum power.

1) Those who Intoxicate - Alchol, Cigrattes, Marijuana or any such intoxication which turns the mind as their servant of their sense & indulge the person in Ignorance.

2) Meat eating- Those who wants to gratify the sense of taste by eating innocent living deserves hell.

3) Illicit sex- Marriage is the purest of all ceremony termed as Dev Vivaha in Sanatan Dharm, physical relationship between partners can only be done after marriage & only with their partners but those who wants to gratify their desire of sex with non partners deserves hell.

4) Gambling- Money earned with Ignorance would always be wasted with ignorance, if someone earns in Gambling or robbery that money can buy bed but no sleep, can buy women but no love, can buy a house but no peace & atlast leads one to hellish planets.

Death
-----------
The moment the person dies the soul gets a "YATNADEH" Deh means body, this body is specialised for torching the sinner& such body never dies. After the person life span comes to an end 2 yamduttas take away the soul of the dead man, soul do not want to leave the material body but its been pulled out forcefully by 2 yamduttas, body is dead but due to little kinetic energy stored & presence of soul the body feels the pain as if 10000 scorpions stinging at once & this can be obseverd many times when we take any dead person for cremation & their bed or the wodden strecher turns wet with loo due to fear of watching the cruel yamduttas. Most of the time 2 yamduttas comes to take the sinner & If the person is a very big sinner 3 yamduttas showup, the logic behind 3 yamdutta is, if on the way 2 are tired abusing & ripping the sinner the 3rd takes in charge.

Now the soul is been given Yatnabody, the worst part of such body is the pain of one slap is as good as the pain of 100 slaps, yatna body makes the pain 100 times more painful, sinner is been tied up with metal ropes liked barbed wire, they are been ripped with a hunter on the way towards hell, to reach hell the road is constructed with thick layers of very hot balu/sand, scorching heat from the top & forest fire on both the sides, they need to walk which seems like running for 99000 yojans (9.3 miles is one yojan) & this distance the yamduttas makes them travel in just few second or a minute (we shouldn’t think from our limited source of material mind out here, should accept whats been mentioned in scripture), the sinner feels the pain as if many years have passed & not yet reached the destination. There are ferocious Dogs with very sharp canine barking at the sinner & Vulture on the way towards hell, this we can even observe when at times dogs barks seeing something invisible (mostly sprits or yamduttas) near our houses because they got this sense to see something the humans eye cant.

The sinner on the way feels thirsty & hungry & now the real torching begins. If he was a meat eater, he is been forced to remove his own flesh with tools& sometimes the yamduttas removes his flesh& feeds him & even he do not deny because he is dying of hunger, the vultures & dogs rips his intestine & he has to watch all of this happening to himself, LIVE. Somehow he reaches hell.

Meat eater- They are been boiled in an oil pan & later removed & their flesh been ripped by animals, bird name Raurav & yamduttas & he is been forcefully fed with his own flesh, yamtduttas abusing & making him realise that he was a meat eater in his human body.

Intoxication- The persons hands are tied with burning metal chains on the back, & one yamdutta catches the lower jaw with another chain pulling downwards & pours hot burning metal liquid in his mouth& makes him realise he was an Alcoholic in his human body.

Illicit Sex- Male or female is been taken to a room where they see a reddish Golden murti/statue of their opposite sex made of hot burning metal, the sinner denies to come in contact with the statue & the yamduttas forces him tying his hands with chain& standing on back of the statue& pulling him for a relationship forcefully & makes him realise how he/she slept with others in the mode of ignorance.

etc etc etc.....there are many sins & the sinner has to suffer, one agrees or do not, would be known when we leave our material body & deserve for what good/bad we committed.

All hells are controlled by Yamaraj who is son of Sun-God. Yamaraj is brother of Yamuna river being daughter of Sun-God. Yamaraj is ruler of hells. He inflicts punishment to those who violet the commands of penal code of the Almighty Lord. There are 28 hells. They are;- 1. Tamisra 2. Andhatamisra, 3. Raurava, 4. Maha-raurava, 5. Description of HELLS.

Every body is afraid of hell. But nobody performs good activities to avoid hell. Man should know the bad activities because of which he goes to hell. In many scriptures we find details about hells and sufferings therein. Last chapter of fifth chanto of Srimad Bhagavatam Purana deals with this subject.

King parikshit inquired about various hells:

narka nama bhagavan kim deshvisesa athva bahistrilokya ahosdvidantral iti. (bhagavata. 5-26-4)

O my Gurudeva, Sri Sukadeva Goswami ; Are there hells? Are hells on the face of this earth or are they located outside the universe or inside it? I want to know about location of all hells.

Sri Sukdeva maharaj said,

Antral eva trijagatyastu dishi dakshinsyam-adhstat bhumeruparistachch jalad yasyam-agnisvattadya :

Oh King Parikshit ! Hells lie within this universe. They are below the earth and above the water on the southern side of the Earth.. There reside the group of the manes called the Agniswattas (Pitraganas).

All hells are controlled by Yamaraj who is son of Sun-God. Yamaraj is brother of Yamuna river being daughter of Sun-God. Hells are department of punishment. Yamaraj is ruler of hells. He inflicts punishment to those who violet the commands of penal code of the Almighty Lord. There are 28 hells. They are;-

1. Tamisra 2. Andhatamisra, 3. Raurava, 4. Maha-raurava, 5. Kumbhi - paka, 6. Kaal- Sutra, 7. Asipatra-vana, 8. Sukar -mukha, 9. Andha kupa, 10. Krimi -bhojana, 11. Sandansa, 12. Tapta-surmi, 13. Vajra kantak salmali. 14. Vaitarni, 15. Puyoda, 16. Prananirodha 17. Visasana, 18. Lala-bhaksha, 19. Sarameya-dana, 20. Avichimat, 21. Ayahpaana, 22. Kshara-kardama, 23. Raksho -gan-bhojana, 24. Shul-proto, 25. Danda-suka , 26. Avata-nirodhana, 27. Paryavartana 28. Suchi-mukha. ?

These are twenty eight hells, places where tortures of various kinds is given by servants of Yamaraj according to the sinful activities. Whoever commits sins he goes to any of these hells. He may be x y z..

1.Tamisra Hell :- Who goes to this hell. Man who takes way wealth of others by fraud or kidnaps child or wife of other by force, goes to this hell. Servants of Yamaraj forcibly throw him into this Tamisra hell.

In this hell there is only darkness and no water and no food is given. They are belaboured with cudgels, and severely scolded and with other tortures. Jiva is filled with dismay and falls into a swoon that very moment but nobody has mercy to protect him because everybody is suffering there like him. Who protects whom?

2. Andha-tamisra hell ; Who goes to this hell? One who enjoys the wife, daughter, sister etc., of another and deceive others, goes to this hell. Therefore man should not have sexual relation with the wife, daughter and sister of another. Unauthorised relation with any women is cause of our sufferings in this hell. Illicit relation takes us to this hell. Enjoyments always gives suffering in due course of time. Man is thrown into this hell like uprooted tree. He is deprived of everything. This hell is full of blinding darkness. Dreadful servants of Yamaraj inflict severe various kinds of punishments according to nature of bad karmas.

3. Raurava hell ; Who goes to Raurava narka? One who has attachment with his wife, husband, children and other relations and nourishes them from day to day through hostility to other living beings in this world, goes to this Raurava hell. He also identifies himself with his body. Such a person goes to Raurava Naraka. One who thinks that wife, children, house and other belongings, belong to him only, goes to this hell. Here everything belongs to God and not to us. Nothing is there in this world for our enjoyment. Only God is enjoyer of all things. So we should not claim that everything belongs to us for our enjoyment. This is illusion or Maya.

All creatures ( Jivas) killed by him are born in this Raurava hell as Rurus. They kill the same fellow who killed them on this earth. Rurus are more ferocious than a snake. These Rurus kill the same fellow who previously killed them, in same way they were killed by him. Raurava hell is full of Rurus and is very danger.

4. Maharaurav hell : Who goes to this hell? This is more danger than raurava naraka. In this hell a kind of Rurus called krvyada live . These Krvyadas eat flesh of those who come to this hell. By nature they are flesh- eater. Who are thrown into this Hell. A man who nourishes his own body and hates other living beings, is thrown into this hell by servants of Yamaraj.

5.Kumbhi- paka hell: Who goes to this hell? Those who eat flesh of man also. They are so cruel that they kill and cook beasts and birds alive and eat. They go to this Kumbhipaka hell. They are Rakshas. They are thrown into this hell. Servants of Yamaraj fry them mercilessly in boiling oil. Meat-eating is prohibited at any cost. Whose meat we eat here , after this birth they eat our flesh.

6.Kalasutra hell : Who goes to this hell? Those who are hostile to their father, mother, Gurudeva, Brahmin and Vedas, they are forcily thrown into this hell. In this Kalasutra hell, earth is made of copper sheet. Copper sheets are heated by fire. This hell is exclusively heated above by sun and below by fire and becomes very hot like fire. This hell has circumference of ten thousand Yojanas. Mind and body are tormented with hunger and thirst, yet man continues to stay there for as many thousand years as there are hair on the body of beast . He is not better than animal, now sitting, now lying down and rolling about, springing on his feet and running in every direction restlessly . He cries for help but nobody helps him because those who are there, all are suffering like him.

7. Asipatra-vana hell ( cluster of trees having sword-like leaves) ; Who goes to this hell? One who does not follow vedic culture or the Vedic teachings and accepts heretic creed, is thrown into this hell by servants of Yamaraj. They beat him by whips in this hell. He runs there to and fro with all his limbs being torn by the sword like leaves with shape-edged on both side of Palmyra trees in that grove, and crying. Ah ! I am finished he drops down unconscious at every step through excessive agony and apostate as he is reaps the fruits of the sin attaching to heretics.

8. Sukar-mukha hell: Who goes to this hell? If king or his officers punish undeserving brahmina go to this hell. Limbs of their body are crushed by most powerful hands like piece of sugarcane is crushed in a cane-crushing machine. These cruel kings and their officers are filled with great consternation shrieking in a piteous tone and now fainting , even like men who were detained by them here, though not found guilty. So before inflicting any kind of punishment king should know as to who is really guilty. To punish a man who is not guilty, is a great sin because of which punisher goes and suffers in this Sukarmukh hell.

9.Andhakupa hell : Who goes to this hell? One who follows rules and regulation of Varna-Ashrama divisions of society viz Brahmina, Kshatriya, Vaisya and Sudra; Brahmachary, Householder, Vanprasthi and Sannyasi.. These are called stages of life created by cosmic Person Himself. Even after following these varna-ashram social - tradition, if a man inflicts pain on the creatures whose means of living is sucking the human blood determined by God Himself, he goes to this hell. He hated and killed dear and other beasts, and reptiles, mosquitoes and lice (louse), bugs and flies and other living beings because of which he is thrown into this Andhakupa hell. All creatures killed by him, take revenge here in this hell. Jiva become restless in darkness.

10. Krimi-bhojan hell : Who goes to his hell? One who eats everything whatever he gets and does not give share to others; and does not perform the five sacrifices which should be done by householders. He goes to this hell. It is said in scriptures that a householder should take his meal only after he has fed a stranger waiting at his door, the servants of house, the young children and the aged of the family, married sisters and daughters and so on who are present at the time. If one does not follow all these rules he goes to Krimibhojan hell. It is worst hell. Man is born in this hell as a worm in a pool full of worms. This hell is a hundred thousand Yojanain in extent.

Those who ate food a part of which had not been given to others and not offered as oblation to fire, they live in this hell as worms and are tortured by the servants of Yamaraj.

They are hurled or thrown headlong after death into this Avichimat hell from a mountain-top ( a hundred yojanas high). When they thrown from mountain there is no support to stand upon because of the steep nature of mountain. There land with a rocky surface appears like water but not water there. So this hell is called Avichimat hell having no water. In this hell man does not die even his body continues to be shattered to minute particles and falls down the moment he is lifted up to the mountain-top again. Liars get such a punishment in this hell.

They accumulate sins in the process of earning, augmenting and preserving wealth. Consequently, after death they fall into this Suchimukha hell. In this hell servants of Yamaraj like tailors stitch all over the body of these sinful men, clinging to wealth like a demon. Sri Suka deva Maharaj described about these hells in Srimad Bhagavatam (5/26/5-37) to King Parikshit
Further Sri Sukadeva maharaj said, O King ! Parikshit
Evam vidha narka yamalaye santi
shatashah sahastrashastesu sarvesu
cha sarvam evayadharm-vartino
There are hundreds and thousands hells in the abode of Yamaraj. Here only important hells have been described. Those who follow path of unrighteousness fall into these hells ; and those who follow the path of virtue enter heaven or other good regions. With the residue of both virtue and sin when the fruit of the bulk of their stock has been reaped they both (virtuous as well as the sinful return to this land of Bharatavarsa ( land of rebirth).
Those who hear legends of Vedas, Puranas, Gita with firm faith and reverence, are capable of destroying all their sins. After hearing glories of God they repeat with devotion never go to hells nor dare the servants of Yamaraj look at them .
