How did Surdas become blind

Surdas was born blind. He was a poet and singer. His works are in Braj Bhasha, which is dialect of Hindi. His exact birth year is disputed between years 1478 and 1483. He left his home at a very young age of six for being neglected by family. He thereafter lived on the banks of Yamuna.
