How to do fasting on Shivaratri?

Devotees keep fast on the day of Shivaratri in order to get Lord Shiva's blessings. According to the Hindu religion, this fast is considered as auspicious as Ashwamedh Yagya. So many people keep fast and do not take a single drop of water at Shivratri. After the worship of Lord Shiva, people can take milk, fruits, tea.
