Ketu is one of the navagrahas. There is an interesting story to the emergence of ketu. During samudra manthan (churning of the ocean), Swarbhanu who was one of the demons disguised himself as a God and sat in between the Surya and Chandra to get amrut . But just when he was about to consume the amrut, Lord Surya and Lord Chandra noticed this and immediately alerted Lord Vishnu who chopped off his head with the sudharshan chakra.
However, since Swarbhanu had already consumed a portion of the amrut he did not die fully and instead his head got separated from his body. His head came to be known as Rahu and his body came to be known as Ketu. Then Rahu and Ketu nursed enmity with Surya and Chandra and are said to be the reason behind the eclipse. Hence it is important to worship Ketu during chandra grahan.

Reciting the Shiva Panchakshari mantra is said to be an effective remedy for the ill effects of Ketu. Also it is advised to worship Lord Ganesh and keep a fast on the day of grahan to ward off the ill effects of chandra grahan.
