No, Mahabharata was not written by Ved Vyas. It was narrated by him and documented by Lord Ganesha.

Correct. Lord Brahma once approached the sage and asked him to write the story of Mahabharata as he knew all the characters of it. Vyas was the grandfather of Kauravas and Pandavas, but lived longer. He lived even after the deaths of his grandchildren.

Yes, he could have written but wanted the help of someone as Mahabharata was a complex story. Composing and writing together was not easy. So he asked Brahma to guide him who can write his narration. So Brahma asked him to approach Ganesh.

Very true, but you know as Ganesha had a playful character so he placed a condition that he will only write if Vyas narrates the story without any pause.

Yes, but Vyas emerged more intelligence than Ganesha. He immediately placed another condition that Ganesha should write only after understanding the verses. So at some complex phrases Ganesha used to pause and think over it and Vyas meanwhile used the intervals to quickly compose some more verses.

You know that it took three years for the two to complete narrating and writing Mahabharata.
