Tridosha is the most miserable & characteristic principal of Ayurveda. Tridosha is the basic structure of Ayurveda. In Ayurvedic Nidan (Diagnosis) & treatment; mostly each & every thing is divided according to tridosha. So it is more important to study about dosha. Remember tridosha is the basic principal of Ayurveda.
What do you mean by Dosha?
Dosha means the particles which by their properties; on aggravation disturbs other dhatus & malas.
Definition of Doshas- According to Sushrut the particle responsible for formation of human body, in balance state they gives support to keep good health, but in state of imbalance they causes various disease are called as dosha.
What are the places for doshas?
Doshas are every where in body. There is not a single place without dosha in a body. But there is dominance of particular dosha over a particular body area. Vata is dominant over parts below Umbilicus. Pitta is dominant over parts in between umbilicus & Heart. Kapha is dominant over parts above Heart.Some interesting part about dosha,

In Tridosh the three dosha are
  1. VATA
  2. PITTA
  3. KAPHA.
In this Vata is more important. Vata is the only dosha who have property of CHAL GUNA. It minces to move from one place to other. Using this property Vata moves other dosha & dhatus, all over in body to keep good health. Tridosha must be in a state of balance for good health. A very small change in balance causes sickness.All doshas have their own characters which are helpful & harmful also. We will study these characters individually.
Characters of vata-
  1. Ruksha- Dry
  2. Laghu- Light
  3. Shit- Cold
  4. Khar- Rough
  5. Sukshama-Very small
  6. Chal- moves.
These properties are characteristics of Vata. No other dosha contain similar properties.

Subtypes of Vata-

1] Prana- It is the very first type. It stays around & above the chest. It controls vital organs like Brain, Heart, Lunges, Tongue, & mind. It is represented by the functional units of respiratory center, sense & motor organs, mind & conscience. It maintains the life & life process by supplying oxygen. It supports the functions of the heart.
2] Udan- It stays at & around chest & neck region. This controls speech & speech center. It maintains colour, complexion, & strength by getting rid of gaseous waste products during expiration.
3] Vyana- It is located at heart. But flows all over body through blood vessels. It is represented by the functional units in the spinal & high centers. Its high speed is seen during all the voluntary & reflex actions. All the voluntary or involuntary movements are controlled by Vyana Vayu.
4] Samana- It is located at stomach & intestine. It represented by the functional unit of autonomic nervous system. It helps the stomach & intestine to receive food, mechanical splitting of food bolus into smaller part & also help in absorbing of useful part & propulsion of waste products.
5] Apana- It is the most important type. It is located at rectum. It is responsible for the ejaculation system of semen, expulsion of menstrual discharge, delivery of fetus, defecation, and micturation.
