The Swayambhunath Stupa or the Monkey Temple was established in 460 A.D. by King Vṛsadeva, grandfather of King Manadeva. It became an important place of worship for Buddhist by the 13th century.
It is said Swayambhu was born from a lotus flower and so it was named as such. 'Swayam' means 'self' and 'bhu' means 'to take birth.'
