Markandeya was the son of sage Mrikandu rishi and his wife Marudmati. Both were the worshipper of Lord Shiva and requested for a boon of begetting a son. The couple had two choices, either to have a son with long life or have a son who will have all the knowledge but life of just 16 years. They opted for second.
