Lord Shiva is called as Mahakal as there is nothing beyond him. There is no dimensions, no element and even no time beyond him.

In Hinduism text, Kaal is referred as time of death and Maha means Great. Lord Shiva is also referred as Anant, which means someone who is never-ending and will not end ever. He is also called as Aadi, which means he has existed even before time.
