Long long time ago When Lord Indra, god of heaven. He was very arrogant however all the gods used to listen to him. All prayers were done with offering to Godess laxmi and then to Lord Indra. All the universe was happy during this period.
During this time, a saint in forest made a beautiful necklace of flower for Lord Indra. This necklace was beautiful, full of fragrance and all flowers would always remain fresh, however Indra being egoistic put this necklace on his elephants neck . One day when he was flying through heaven and his necklace fell somewhere in the forests, Knowing this the sage who had gifted him this flower necklace became very angry , he said to Lord Indra that I gave this necklace of flower to you , you put in on elephant and now you have lost in forest. From now on Lord Indra you will lose your powers and hence as a result of this asura (Demons) became powerful, Godess laxmi saw this happening and hence she left the place saying that she cannot live at a place where there is so much disharmony and disorder. Now gods in heaven became concerned as they were losing powers. Lord Indra soon realized that this was serious problem.
The asura's(Demons) might soon over take heaven hence Lord Indra along with other Devta's(gods) went to Lord Vishnu for help and They asked lord Vishnu what are they supposed to do . The Vishnu said that they need to churn the ocean to get the pot of Amrit(Immortal nectar) and drink so that they can regain the power . Listening to this they went on to churn ocean with Lord Vishnu becoming as tortoise, pole was put on its back and immmortal snake was tied like a rope to pole. Now this immortal snake was used as rope to churn.
The Ausra's(demons) held one end of snake(mouth of the snake) and Devta held the tail and now they started churning ocean, many good things came out as result of this churning process such as kamdhenu cow , parijat etc. now when Amrit(Immortal nectar) came out of churing process asura's took this pot of Amrit(Immortal nectar) and ran. looking at the asura's taking amrit lord vishnu took form of mohini , the lady beautiful. she took pot by tricking asura's and flew away with Amrit(Immortal nectar) pot but when she was flying drops of Amrit(Immortal nectar) fell out of pot and one of the asura drank this Amrit(Immortal nectar) seeing this lord vishnu in the form of mohini cut his neck with discs(sudrashan chakra) and as trunk was falling on earth , drops of Amrit(Immortal nectar) that has fallen from the demon mouth also fell on the earth and what emerged out of this drop was garlic plant and thats why garlic have many curated properties but it also has blood of ausra (demon) and this is the reason why when we are on spiritual path we don't eat garlic.
