On the eighth day of Navratri, we worship Mata MahaGauri. Mata Parvathi performed severe austerities standing in open in the Himalayas without proper shelter, rest, food or water. As a result Her complexion and body turned dark and rough. When Shri Shiva accepted Her devotion and agreed to marry Her, He washed Her face and body lovingly in the waters of the Ganges. As a result Her face and body became very fair, lustrous and soft. Hence She is called MahaGauri or the extremely fair one.

Date -13th April 2019 Saturday
Thithi - Ashtami
Goddess worshipped - MahaGauri
Beeja Mantra -Om Hreem Shreem Glaum Gam Gauri Geem Namah
Offerings / Naivedya - Coconut
Color - White
Gem- Sphatik or white sapphire
Rudraksha- 9 mukhi or faced

Mata Mahagauri is a beauty who has an extremely fair complexion which is compared to the conch, moon and the white kunda flower. She is seated on a bull and she has four arms. Her right hands carry a trident and show abhaya or protection. In Her left hands She carries a damaru or small drum and shows Varada or granting of boon. Mata MahaGauri is very peaceful, calm and glowing. Her beauty is bright like the sparkling white crystal.

In our journey of Navratri, we have been taken through all the chakras and we have evolved from the lower to the highest chakras and have destroyed the illusion of time. Now we are ready to take the next step to liberation. Mahagauri who is epitome of success in tapas leads us over to liberation. She destroys our karmas and sins, liberates us from the material world and sorrows. She leads us through the path of virtue to liberation.

May the Grace of Mata MahaGauri be with us all.
