Father of Shantanu in Mahabharat

Shantanu was the youngest son of King Pratipa, who was descendant of the Bharata race.

Shantanu is best known in Mahabharata epic for being the father of Bhishma.

Shantanu's mother was Sunanda, who was in her old age when Shantanu was born. He was named Shantanu as then Pratipa had controlled his passions by ascetic penances.

Shantanu was king of Hastinapur.
