How many language are there in India?

I have heard that india is land of rich culture and traditions.How mane languages are there in India? Curious to know.....

There many be many more languages than any other part in the world but what you want to know how many languages are their in india or how many language are spoken in india ? coz i think numbers might vary comparing numbers of both.
frankly even i don't know numbers in both forms but as far as Constitution India has lists 22 languages which have been given recognition and are official languages based on different regions.

Among these languages, distinction of classical language is given to the below listed 7 languages by Government of India

1. Kannada
2. Malayalam
3. Odia
4. Sanskrit
5. Tamil
6. Telugu.

After doing bit of research I found out that according to 2001 Census of India India consists of 122 main and 1599 other languages. among which thirty languages are spoken by million+ native speakers and approx 122 by 10000+ community of people.
