When Angkor Wat was built in the early 12th century by Suryavarman II (completed by Jayavarman VII), it was a Hindu temple. It was dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Later, in the same century, it was transformed into a Buddhist temple, but gradually in fact. It is the largest Hindu temple in the world now and spread in an area of 162.6 hectares.
