The Shiva Purana describes the story of the birth of Lord Ganesha and how he came to have a head representing an animal form.

Goddess Parvati carved out a boy from the dirt of her body. He was assigned the duty of guarding her bathroom entrance. Lord Shiva, husband of Goddess Parvati, returned and was disallowed to enter. Lord Shiva flew into a rage and slew Ganesha’s head off.

Parvati was dismayed and seeing her distraught state Shiva instructed his army (Gana) to fetch a head of any being, sleeping, facing north. The soldiers found an elephant’s head and fixed it on the body of young Ganesha. Shiva restored Ganesha’s life and appointed him as the leader (Pati) of his army. Thus the name – ‘Ganapati’ came into existence. Shiva bestowed Ganesha with a blessing that He had to be paid obeisance by everybody, before commencing any work.

Brahma Vaivarta Purana tells us about another story of the Lord Ganesha’s birth but not many know about it. Parvati was advised by Shiva to keep a fast or Vrata , called Punyaka Vrata for a year to have a son which would please Lord Vishnu. After the boy was born, all the Gods and Goddesses celebrated, except for Lord Shani, the son of Surya (Sun God), who would not look at the infant.

This really upset Goddess Parvati and she immediately demanded an explanation. Shani explained that it could be very harmful for the infant if he glimpsed at him.
