The following are some questions that often tend to engage not just historians, but Hindus themselves.
When did Hinduism start? Where did Hinduism start?
Hinduism of India is a highly complex religion that was formed by the integration of a large number of cults from across civilizations. Historians have over-simplified this gigantic religion. As per them, India is made of two ethnic groups called Aryans and Dravidians. Aryans brought their God Vishnu with them, while Siva is the God of Dravidians; and Hinduism, as per them, was supposedly born by the integration of these two groups. However, they could not have imagined the complexity of this massive religion, because it requires a deep knowledge of Indian scriptures, apart from a knowledge of its historical aspects, to be able to really ferret out the formation of this profound religion. The following is a brief up of how the various cults were integrated into one colossal religion of Hinduism.
1) Brahman, Brahma, Saraswati, Devas – This is the original native religion of India, especially of the Indus valley, existing about sixteen thousand years ago. There was no trinity then. There was only one supreme God called Brahman, the formless God, who was worshipped as Brahma, the God with form. Saraswati was the Mother Goddess, the consort of Brahma. Devas filled up the ancillary positions. The worship of Devas was done in a certain peculiar manner, which resulted in a lot of confusion across the theologies of India, Persia, and Mesopotamia.
2) Purusha/Narayan/Vishnu – The worship of Purusha/Narayan belonged to Sri Lanka; while Vishnu was a Sun God belonging to the state of Orissa. Vaishnavism was formed by integrating the cults of large number of different tribes. Different incarnations of Vishnu were actually the deities of different tribes that originated individually at different places of the Indian subcontinent. All of them were integrated into one universal religion. This religion got integrated on top of the Brahma worship around eleven thousand years ago.
3) Laxmi – Goddess Laxmi was formed by the integration of two Goddesses – one from Maharashtra region of India, and another from the Kashmir region. The two deities were integrated into the personification of Laxmi, at about the same time that the worship of Vishnu started.
4) Siva – His worship originated from the Indonesian region about eleven thousand years ago. The history of Saivism is the most complex of all of the World’s religions. It is because of its complexity that the study of Indian history became so difficult. If not for this complexity, the study of Indian history would have been much much easier. The religion spread from Indonesia to Brahmaputra Valley, where it stayed for two thousand years, before it spread to Gujarat. The religion grew there by integrating the cults of Ganesh and Skanda into itself. From there, after another three thousand years, it started through the Pancha Dravida regions of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra, and Tamilnadu. Finally, it spread about to the rest of India in the last two thousand years.
5) Ganga – She was the Goddess who was worshipped for a long time, for several thousands of years, as the wife of Siva, across the civilization, before going into historical oblivion in the last four thousand years. Her worship originated simultaneously with that of Siva.
6) Parvati – She was a goddess of the Brahmaputra valley region, with her worship originating about nine thousand years ago. For a long time, her worship was local to Brahmaputra Valley, and later to Gujarat, with her worship spreading to other parts of India only in the last four thousand years.
7) Skanda/Muruga – His worshipped originated in Africa, where he is a God of mountains. His worship is probably one of the oldest in India, as old as that of Brahman. Interestingly, he was worshipped as the son of Agni, the fire god, for six to seven thousand years, before he became a son of Siva about seven thousand five hundred years ago.
8) Ganesh – He is from the Maharashtra region, who got integrated into Saivism, as the son of Siva, about seven thousand years ago.
9) Kali, Ambika, Durga, others – These are actually the deities of various tribes that were integrated into the Vedic religion. Those days, there used to be tremendous amount of migration to the Indian subcontinent. Each tribe that migrated to India had its own deity. Care was taken to integrate all these individual deities into one supreme Vedic deity. Kaula/Kali worshippers were the first tribe that got integrated in this fashion. Because they were the first do so, the word Kaula or Kula went on to become the term for Caste in Indian languages.
