During Samudra Manthan a lethal poison too was released along with Amrita. It was so lethal that could destroy all the creation. Lord Shiva consumed it to protect the creation. To cool him down bhang was offered. This was the first time he tasted chillum.

There is one more story to it. Once Lord Shiva was very hungry and so he consumed leaves from the cannabis plant. He realized it was refreshing and thereafter bhang became his favorite.

Hindus admire and respect the cannabis plant. It is something divine to them. It is offered to Lord Shiva as prasad.

Lord Shiva is associated with marijuana. There are five sacred plants in Hindu text and marijuana is one among those.

In the fourth book of the Vedas the Cannabis is mentioned as one of the five kingdoms of herb that is helpful in giving relief from anxiety.

The bhang is prepared from marijuana leaves and flowers. It is a brewed drink.

Ganja is prepared from dried flower, stems and leaves of it.

Charas on the other hand is made from the apex of bloomed cannabis flower.

On the occasion of Maha Sivaratri, usually in the month of February or March, Hindus consume marijuana.

In Vedas it is written moderate consumption of marijuana is way less harmful than the consumption of alcohol or tobacco. It has medicinal values.

Yes, true. It is said the medicinal values of marijuana assist in meditation or sadhaan. This is the reason the sadhus are seen consuming bhang when being on the extreme climatic conditions of the mountainous regions. It calms nerves in such cold weather.
