The King of Deva, Indra, had the image with him from the time he gained immortality by drinking Amrita. In Swamimalai, at the time of his penance, he put the image down at Tiruvalanchuzhi. Upon which the image was stuck to that spot. This shrine also known as the vinayagar shrine is found as soon as you enter the temple complex.

The shrine is made up of stone windows with intricate designs and granite pillars full of delicate carvings. A festival which is ten days long is celebrated here. The festival mainly celebrated in the temple is Vinayaka Chathurthi.

Legends: this particular shrine has been associated with Heranda Munivar. One another shrine in the vicinity of Kottaiyur is also associated with him. A yagnam had been carried out by the famous Durvasa muni here. There are also several Siva Lingams present here which are said to be established by the devas who used to attend the yagnam.

Kaveri is said to have disappeared into the ground here. Heranda Munivar had tried to run after it and retrieve it. When he did so, Kaveri came back to the ground in the shrine and encircled it. This gave the shrine its name to be Valanchuzhi.

Festivals: on the 6th day of Marghazhi a festival is celebrated here. Apart from it Vinayak Chathurthi is also celebrated. The famous swaminatha temple is situated nearby and this temple is said to be a sub temple of that temple. The festivals are mainly celebrated during the month of Pankuni as in the Tamil Calendar.

During the festival an image of Subramanya is taken along in the procession. The procession starts from Swamimalai and ends in to Tiruvalanchuzhi. Here , episodes from Vallikalyanam are narrated. In the episodes the Ganapati, who is the elder brother of Skanda comes to his brother’s aid, and Skanda attempts to gain the hand of Valli’s in marriage.
