Mahashivratri is an important Hindu festival celebrated on 14th night of the waning moon in the Hindu month of Phalgun. The importance of the occasion can be gauged from the fact that the first royal bathing of the Kumbh Mela is performed on Mahashivratri.

There are various legends given in the Puranas as to why Mahashivratri is celebrated on this day. The most prominent of them is that it is on this day Shiva (also known as Shankara) and Parvati got married.
