The Angkor Wat was a lost temple. In the mid-19th century it was founded by a French explorer named Henri Mouhot. Through his travel notes he popularized the monuments in the Western countries. He then thought it to be built by Greece or Rome. Later it became difficult to him and by the early Western visitors to believe Angkor Wat was built by the Khmers.
