Are you wondering about the curved trunk of Lord Ganesha? Why the trunk is curved and not straight? Vinayaka is called Vakratunda because of the curved trunk. The word “vakra” means curved, “tunda” means trunk. There are two reasons behind this.

One of the reasons being the curved trunk represents two aspects: one, vakra, curved. It means which is not straight is our mind. It conveys that we are not straightforward, excellent in manipulation and many more. Also Vakra means perversion, wickedness, cruelty, manipulation. It means that Vakratunda is the one who takes care of manipulative mind.

Another Important aspect of “Vakratunda” is that he is the one who turns his face away. Though Ridhhi and Sidhhi (wealth and success) are by his side, he did not have a glance at them. The persons who achieve something worthwhile in the life who can turn away like him such allurements. True thinkers should possess this quality.

Traditionally Ganapati is worshipped at the commencement of every auspicious task. It is known that our senses are controlled by the mind. More like a king he is generous and boon to many of us. Lord Ganesha first avatar is of Vakratunda. It is an embodiment of the Absolute aspect of Godhood called Brahman in the form of Ganesha.

There was a story that a demon named Matsara was born out of the Pramaada of Indra. He went about conquering all the three worlds. Lord Dattatreya advised all the Gods to invoke the grace of Lord Vakratunda. Later, the demon got terrified at the sight of Vakratunda and surrendered to him.
