It relaxes the body and also calms the mind. By learning to either concentrate on a single object or by being mindful of the passing thoughts and feelings, meditators are able to create a state of mind which is both alert and relaxed at the same time.

Even though not every meditation may feel pleasant, persistent practice will increase the mind’s capacity for mindfulness and inner peace.

In a study with Buddhist monks, neuroscientist Richard Davidson was able to prove that the brains of experienced meditators show a much higher gamma brain wave activity, indicating higher mental activity and consciousness – according to a Washington Post article by Marc Kaufmann titled “Meditation Gives Brain a Charge.”

According to Kaufmann, meditation not only seems to improve cognition and self-awareness, but also leads to a more peaceful, pleasant and compassionate state of mind.

Harvard neuroscientist Sara Lazar was able to prove scientifically that meditation increases the size of the brain. She found that regular meditation increases the areas of the cortex connected to cognition, emotional processing and well-being. Since these brain areas normally get thinner with age, meditation is likely to slow down the brain’s aging process.
