According to Hinduism, the universe has been created many times over, and when creation starts again, the waters produce ‘a thousand-petaled lotus flower of pure gold, radiant like the sun. This was considered to be a doorway, or an opening of the mouth of the womb of the universe.’

The water thus symbolises procreation and the cosmic lotus generation. ‘Thus, lotus is the first product of the creative principle.’ Lord Brahma, the creator God, sat in the centre of the flower. He cut the lotus into three parts, heaven, earth and sky.
