The lotus, with its open petals rising above the water, giving birth to creation, is also a symbol for the divine vulva. ‘The opening of the mouth of the womb of the universe.’ In Passionate Enlightenment, Miranda Shaw states ‘the outer opening of the sexual organ resembles the petals of the lotus, while the vulva and cervix are like the heart of the flower’.
The lotus has been seen as giving birth to creation. It was not the initiating force. From the depths of the water, a deep ‘om’ sounded in the Hindu stories, awaking Vishnu who called Brahma into being. In the Egyptian stories, the lotus arises out of the cosmic oceans and gives birth to the Sun God and light spread in all directions.
