For the conditioned soul, death is the greatest enemy of life. It is the destroyer of all plans. It is the cruel separator of loved ones, of lovers, of life itself. Death is unavoidable yet everyone is making plans to live forever. Science is telling us that sometime in the future, the body will be made deathless. The conditioned soul, bereft of any real knowledge of the soul and Supersoul, takes this life to be the all in all. He is unable to separate reality from illusion. This stage of existence is known as Maya or illusion. Maya means to accept that the body,or outer covering, is the self. As the body changes, the person thinks that he is changing. Therefore, death appears to be the end of life when in actuality death is just the end of the body but not of life itself. By the force of the laws of nature, death is the demise of the body and the beginning of another body, formed by the laws of karma. According to one's activities during his present life, he is awarded another body next life. This ongoing cycle of birth and death only applies to the conditioned soul. A properly liberated soul does not have to undergo karmic change.

For the liberated soul and the soul on the path of liberation, death is not the enemy because death only applies to the body. The body is born, grows, gives off some by-products, dwindles and then dies. But the soul remains aloof from these stages of bodily existence. A liberated or purified soul understands that the body is just a covering or outer dress. It is temporary and exists due to the independent desires of the individual soul to enjoy separately from the Supreme Lord. As soon as the minute individual soul wishes to enjoy separately, he is forced to enter the material atmosphere and accept a material body within the 8,400,000 species of life. A liberated soul, having performed a lifetime of devotional service, has qualified himself to regain his relationship with the Supreme Lord. The Lord, being pleased with the devotional activities of his devotee, awakens his memory of pure devotional service. Thus the Lord reveals Himself and allows His devotee to serve Him in pure loving service. Such a pure soul does not mix unnecessarily with his body during his lifetime and when death comes, he simply carries on his devotional service in a better body suited for loving service to the Lord. Death does not pose a problem for him during life because he is never falsely attached to the body or making obsessive plans for the body's happiness. He is not overly attached to relatives or place of residence. A devotee is not in illusion about his body; therefore death does not pose an obstacle but rather an opportunity.

The end of life of a person or organism or any living thing is called death. Death is only one fact which unifies all of us regardless of our religion, caste, culture, geographically. Death is the permanent stop of all biological activities happening in a living organism.
