The Angkor Wat Hindu temple was rediscovered by French explorer Henri Mouhot in 1860 and he mentioned about it in his travel notes in 1863. It attracted Western interest and initially some believed the monuments were built by Greece or Rome. The later finding was disappointing for them as it was unbelievable that such a huge and beautiful temple complex could have been built by the Khmer Empire.
