The idea behind the Bindi as a chakra goes back to 3000 B.C. when Hindu rishi-munis wrote about it in the Vedas. Therein they described the physical/spiritual value of the seven chakras in the human body, the sixth one being the ‘third eye’ chakra. This is where the Bindi is placed, namely at the Ajna (meaning ‘perceive’) chakra, also known as ‘brow chakra’.
The Bindi has, therefore, come to stand for inner knowledge, intuition, and feminine wisdom. It also denotes the purity of thought and deed. These meanings are not new; in fact, they find parallels in ancient knowledge texts. The ‘inner eye’ has links to the Divine, which is why women with Bindis are often associated with the Mother Goddess.
